Microsoft is expanding its cloud gaming capabilities by allowing Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers to stream a limited selection of their owned games directly to Xbox Series X/S or Xbox One consoles, without the need to install them first. This feature is currently available to Xbox Insiders and will be rolled out to all users at a later date.
The concept of streaming owned games was first introduced by Microsoft in 2019, with the feature initially expected to launch alongside Xbox Cloud Gaming the following year. However, delays pushed the feature's launch until November of this year, when Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers were finally able to stream not only Game Pass titles but also their owned games on a variety of devices.
Initially, the feature was only available for streaming to smart TVs, browsers on devices like smartphones and tablets, and Meta Quest headsets. Microsoft had mentioned plans to extend this functionality to Xbox consoles and the Xbox app on Windows, but it was initially expected to roll out in 2024. The surprise early launch for Xbox Insiders marks a quicker-than-anticipated expansion of the feature.
Beginning today, Xbox Insiders in the Alpha Skip-Ahead and Alpha rings with an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription can preview the ability to stream their owned games to Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One consoles. To access the feature, users can navigate to "My games & apps" > "Full library" > "Owned Games" on their console. Compatible games will display a cloud badge, allowing users to select a game and choose "Play with Cloud Gaming" to start streaming.
Currently, the selection of compatible titles is limited to around 50 games, although it includes a strong mix of both recent blockbusters and popular indie titles. Some of the notable games available include Baldur's Gate 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Star Wars Outlaws, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Warhammer 4K: Space Marine 2, Life is Strange: Double Exposure, Balatro, Hades, Animal Well, Dredge, Phasmophobia, and The Plucky Squire. Microsoft has promised that the library of cloud-playable games will continue to grow over time.
